Thanks to Jen for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.

WHAT DOES THE NAME ARIA MEAN?

In Italian, aria literally means “air,” but in common usage it refers to a melody — a musical solo most often heard in opera. The word traces back to the Latin aer. As a name, Aria evokes refinement, artistry, and a connection to music and performance.

An aria is typically an elaborate vocal piece, and that association gives the name an elevated, artistic feel rather than a down-to-earth or folksy vibe. Given the current interest in word names and melodic choices, it’s no surprise Aria has become widely used. But the name likely has deeper roots than the recent trend of noun-based baby names.

HOW DOES NICKNAME ARI FIT IN?

Start with Ari. Used both on its own and as a name element, Ari means “lion” in Hebrew and “eagle” in Old Norse. Aria can be seen as a feminine form of Ari, which would suggest meanings like “lioness” or “female eagle.”

Connections to classical myth and history also hover near the name. The epithet Areia was applied to Athena in some myths, linking the sound to a warrior goddess who combined wisdom and strategic strength. Aria’s sound is also close to Ariadne, a Greek mythological name, and to Ariana, which has been popular in recent decades. While these names aren’t necessarily etymologically related to Aria, their similar sounds help explain the name’s broad appeal.

GENDER-NEUTRAL NAME

Another possible root is the Indo-Iranian Aryan, meaning “noble.” The variant Arya — spelled with a Y — is used as a unisex name in India and other regions, and its rising global use has blurred strict gender lines for similar names.

FAMOUS FICTIONAL ARIAS

WESTEROS

The most prominent Arya-with-a-Y is Arya Stark from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and the HBO adaptation Game of Thrones. Introduced as the youngest Stark daughter, Arya rejects traditional feminine roles in favor of training as a fighter. Maisie Williams’s portrayal made Arya a popular and influential fictional heroine: resourceful, determined, and independent — qualities that have helped inspire parents to choose related names.

ROSEWOOD

On Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale played Aria Montgomery, a central character in the mystery-driven drama that ran from 2010 to 2017. The show’s blend of romance and suspense, plus Aria’s distinctive style, also contributed to the name’s visibility among a younger audience.

MORE ARIAS

Aria appears beyond personal names. In aerospace history, ARIA stood for the Apollo Range Instrumentation Aircraft, specialized planes that helped NASA track missions during the Apollo era and beyond. The acronym later stood for Advanced Range Instrumentation Aircraft, continuing the program’s mission support role.

Other notable Aria references include:

  • Actress Aria Curzon, known for voice roles such as Ducky in The Land Before Time series.
  • American water polo player Aria Fischer, an Olympic gold medalist and notable young achiever on the U.S. team.
  • Japanese manga and anime titled ARIA (also AQUA), set in the fictional NeoVenezia, and Aria the Scarlet Ammo, a separate action-oriented series.

HOW POPULAR IS THE NAME ARIA?

Aria has historical usage stretching back more than a century; five newborn girls received the name as early as 1900, and it appears sporadically through the 20th century. In 1980 there were 33 babies named Aria, showing it was never entirely absent.

The name began rising more noticeably around the turn of the 21st century. Aria entered the U.S. Top 1000 in 2000 at #957 and climbed steadily to reach #19 in 2018. As of 2024, Aria remained popular at #26. The Arya spelling also gained prominence after 2010 and ranked #162 in 2024.

Variants and similar forms include Ariah, Ariya, and Ariyah. Most pronunciations follow three syllables — ahr-ee-uh — though some say ah-RYE-uh, which rhymes with Mariah.

MUSICAL and FIERCE

Aria combines musical elegance with a contemporary, flowing sound. It appeals to parents who like word names, admire strong fictional heroines, or prefer names that feel both modern and grounded in history. Aria’s melodic quality and cultural resonance make it a distinctive and memorable choice for a baby name.
