I remember as a child how excited we were when my mom brought home a sweet Florida watermelon. It felt like torture waiting for that huge melon to chill in the refrigerator, but once it was cold, a wedge of watermelon on a hot Florida day was pure bliss.

Biting into a wedge of bright red flesh and feeling the sweet juice drip down my chin is a treasured memory I now share with my grandchildren. The kids in our family devour watermelon all summer long. As a Grammy I’m a bit neater now—cubing the watermelon keeps the juice from running everywhere and makes it ideal for recipes like this salsa.

When Florida watermelons are in season I like to turn them into fun, shareable dishes. The kids still enjoy wedges, but adults often reach for a bowl of this sweet-and-spicy Watermelon Salsa and their favorite chips. It’s a simple, refreshing starter that brightens any summer spread.

Florida Summer Produce

Summer brings an abundance of fresh Florida produce. Alongside watermelon you’ll find ripe tomatoes, sweet corn, blueberries, and great local seafood at many grocers.

Look for the Fresh from Florida label to enjoy peak-season flavor and support local growers. When these items are in season, they make summer meals taste especially fresh and vibrant.

A summer barbecue isn’t complete without sliced Florida tomatoes on the burgers, sweet corn on the cob, and cold watermelon wedges. This Watermelon Salsa is a great snack to enjoy while the grill heats up.
